A DogWish Success Story
DogWish Tethering Service Dogs Transform Lives

Max & Jack
At first tethering was very difficult for Max, because he is a very busy little boy and hates to be restrained in any way.  But as each day passes, he is becoming less and less resistant and seems to really enjoy Jack-Jack’s presence.  Jack-Jack has done extremely well on all of our outings.  He has helped Max to stop escaping, and face his world.  I didn’t realize that fear was driving Max until we got Jack...

Tethering is where you use a DogWish Service Dog to keep their handler safe, from running, escaping, eloping away from home, the family, or to any unsafe area.  Every year hundreds of disabled people, scared, angry, or confused, take off and run into busy streets, or away from home where they become lost, and get into serious mishaps and accidents.  As you will read, tethering stops this and many times teaches the handlers to quit this dangerous behavior.

I had just flown in to Texas, came off the plane, picked up my luggage, and then, while his mother screamed, saw her son as he ran across a four lane highway, across an uncut grassy field and headed right towards the main runway where the Jets had lined up to take off.  Trying to catch Max, Michelle’s' 7 year old son who had Autism was a memorable event.  I quickly tethered Max to Jack, his new DOGWISH Service Dog, and back we walked to the car.  I made sure that they were well equipped to handle things without me, and returned home.  Because of Jack, Max has never put himself in harms’ way again.  Since then I have seen over a hundred situations where children and adults need to be tethered to dogs, and trained many dogs to accept this type of handling. Tethering has become a favorite technique which I have used successfully to do many amazing things.

This last fall we placed a 120 pound female Cane Corso DOGWISH Service Dog into a full time enrollment in a public school with a 6 year old 65 pound little girl, with autism.  She had to get onto a School Bus, attach the dog to a seat belt, ride to school, un attach the dog, get off the bus by herself, take the dog into the School property, and go to the play ground and classroom with her dog, all by herself, without any help.  The dog, remaining on a tether, had to stay by her desk all day.  At first the County Administration did not think it could be done.  Not only was our DOGWISH Service Dog perfect, the girl’s performance at school improved 100 percent, and the kids in class raised their performance by 25 percent.  Not only did she stop eloping, her melt downs went from 2 hours to 10 minutes.

I have never had a tethering incident where anyone was ever hurt, because I train the dogs to respond properly.  I don’t believe in mistakes, and make sure the dogs are correct, genetically, mentally and emotionally, and educated properly for the work.  I use tethering everywhere, and it works.

DOGWISH does the same thing with seniors who have Alzheimer’s’ Syndrome, and after teaching the dog where it is and isn’t allowed to walk, have not had a single incident of a Senior getting hurt because one of our dogs didn’t do the job.  At DOGWISH we train our dogs to make up for the inabilities in their handlers.  This is just one such area.  Tethering has become a blessing for many of our families.
